At 75, Sigourney Weaver Reflects on the Hidden Truth Behind Alien
When Alien premiered in 1979, few could have predicted it would redefine science fiction—or launch Sigourney Weaver into cinematic immortality. But behind the sleek terror and groundbreaking visuals was a production riddled with conflict, rewrites, and near-missteps that could have altered film history.
Now, decades later, Weaver has openly discussed the surprising truth: Ripley was never intended to be a feminist icon—and one controversial scene nearly undermined everything the character would come to represent.
The origins of Alien trace back to writer Dan O’Bannon, who reimagined ideas from his earlier sci-fi project Dark Star into a darker screenplay originally тιтled Star Beast.
The script went through numerous rewrites as producers Walter Hill and David Giler stepped in, challenging O’Bannon’s dialogue and restructuring major elements.
Early drafts were wildly different. There were no women in the crew. No android subplot. Even the alien’s habitat was envisioned as a bizarre pyramid-shaped egg chamber. Some rewrites flirted with time travel and historical figures—ideas that never made it close to the screen.
Through all the turbulence, one radical decision emerged almost accidentally: Ellen Ripley would survive.
Contrary to popular belief, Ripley wasn’t initially conceived as a female character. In several drafts, all crew roles were essentially gender-neutral. Weaver has clarified in interviews that no one on set was consciously trying to make a feminist statement.
“No one thought the woman would survive,” she once explained. “That’s why it worked.”
The shock factor—not ideology—drove the decision. The audience would expect the male captain or a heroic male figure to make it out alive. Making Ripley the final survivor subverted expectations in a way no one saw coming.
But that bold choice almost didn’t land the way we know it today.
One early script included a Sєx scene between Ripley and Captain Dallas. It was written as a moment of relief after the crew’s trauma—but Weaver immediately questioned it.
Why, she asked, would two crew members begin a romance while a ᴅᴇᴀᴅly extraterrestrial stalked their ship?
She felt the scene diluted Ripley’s authority and distracted from the escalating horror. Director Ridley Scott reportedly liked the idea at first, but ultimately agreed to remove it.
That decision proved pivotal.
Without the romantic subplot, Ripley’s character stood apart. She wasn’t defined by Sєxuality or emotional dependency. She was defined by competence, intelligence, and survival instinct. In hindsight, cutting that scene helped solidify one of cinema’s most enduring heroines.
The infamous chestburster sequence remains one of the most shocking moments in horror history. O’Bannon claimed the idea was inspired by severe physical pain from Crohn’s disease, imagining something tearing its way out from within.
But even this iconic moment wasn’t immune to controversy.
Director David Cronenberg later suggested similarities between the xenomorph and creatures from his own body horror film Shivers. While the debate never escalated legally, it highlights just how creatively volatile the era was.
Meanwhile, producers clashed with O’Bannon over script credit, pushing the project into arbitration. The version audiences ultimately saw was a product of compromise, tension, and last-minute vision.
Few fans realize how different Alien might have been.
Alternate versions of deaths were filmed, including more graphic and explicit sequences. In one cut ending, Ripley was even meant to discover Dallas alive but grotesquely cocooned—begging for death. That scene was restored decades later in the Director’s Cut.
By choosing restraint over spectacle, Scott preserved the film’s psychological intensity. Less truly became more.
Weaver’s journey with Alien didn’t end with the original film. She reprised Ripley in Aliens, Alien 3, and Alien: Resurrection, becoming one of the highest-paid actresses of her time. She reportedly earned $4 million for Alien 3, including additional compensation for shaving her head twice during production.
Yet after Resurrection, she stepped away.
While she has occasionally expressed openness to meaningful returns, Weaver has also made it clear that Ripley’s story must serve a purpose—not just nostalgia.
The franchise may have defined her early legacy, but she refused to let it define her entirely.
Academics continue to dissect Alien for its themes: corporate greed, bodily autonomy, violation, labor exploitation, artificial intelligence, and gender politics.

But perhaps the most overlooked truth is this: Alien became revolutionary not because it set out to be political—but because one actress insisted on protecting the integrity of her character.
