Catholic Priest Blasts Super Bowl Halftime Show—Calls It a Pagan Liturgy

Catholic Priest Sounds Alarm on Halftime Shows and “Cultural Liturgy”

A Catholic priest is drawing national attention after forcefully criticizing the moral direction of modern sports entertainment, particularly Super Bowl halftime shows and other high-profile performances.

Speaking during a live broadcast, he described what he sees as a troubling blend of eroticism, celebrity worship, and spiritual confusion playing out on some of the world’s biggest stages.

His comments come amid ongoing backlash over provocative halftime performances and a separate controversy involving a Major League Baseball event in Los Angeles that featured a display many Christians considered deeply offensive.

Referencing that incident, the priest pointed to a performance in which a person portraying Jesus was depicted coming down from a cross, followed by another performer engaging in a pole dance using the cross as a prop.

The event took place near Easter, intensifying outrage among believers.

“This is the most sacred event and symbol in the Christian universe,” he said, echoing sentiments previously expressed by Bishop Robert Barron. “How can Christians remain silent in the face of that?”

Bishop Barron had earlier described the incident as an example of extreme anti-Catholicism and argued that Christians must respond clearly and publicly when sacred symbols are mocked.

The priest expanded that concern beyond a single event, connecting it to a broader cultural pattern.

He turned his attention to the Super Bowl halftime show, criticizing both the lyrical content and the choreography of recent performances. Without repeating explicit lyrics, he referenced translations of songs performed at a recent halftime show, calling them vulgar and inappropriate for a public audience.

But his argument went beyond taste or decency.

He framed sports entertainment as a form of “cultural liturgy”—a ritualistic gathering that mirrors worship. According to him, stadium events now resemble a kind of secular religion, complete with music, choreography, icons, and communal participation.

“There is an immoral cultural liturgy that we all imbibe on the weekends,” he said. “And that is absolutely scary.”

In his view, the issue is not limited to one artist, one political party, or one network. He criticized conservatives and liberals alike, arguing that both sides often promote performers and cultural figures whose content contradicts Christian teaching.

“It’s not about right versus left,” he suggested. “It’s about whether Christ is at the center.”

He challenged Christians who attempt to defend provocative performances based on political alignment, arguing that loyalty to party should never supersede loyalty to faith.

For believers, he said, explicit Sєxual content and overt eroticism cannot be justified simply because the performer aligns with one’s political preferences.

The priest also addressed a common reʙuттal: that provocative dancing or explicit lyrics are not equivalent to mocking Christ directly.

He countered that argument with a theological claim—suggesting that celebrating Sєxual immorality ultimately dishonors Christ just as surely as mocking a cross.

“God didn’t die to give us a symbol,” he argued. “He died to save sinners.”

In his perspective, when society glorifies behaviors Christianity identifies as sinful, it is symbolically rejecting the very sacrifice it claims to respect. That, he said, should concern believers far more than partisan debates.

The broader theme of his message was about worship. He argued that it is impossible to fully separate religion from public life. If a culture does not orient itself toward Christ, he said, it will inevitably orient itself toward something else—celebrity, pleasure, nationalism, or power.

“When you watch a halftime show, what is it aimed at?” he asked. “What is it revealing?”

For him, the answer is clear: it reveals what a society values most.

The comments have sparked intense reactions online. Supporters praise him for speaking boldly about moral standards and cultural drift.

They argue that many Christians have grown desensitized to content that would have been unthinkable decades ago.

Critics, however, contend that the priest overstates the spiritual significance of entertainment and risks alienating younger believers who see music and sports as neutral cultural spaces.

Others argue that artistic expression, even when provocative, should not automatically be framed as religious opposition.

Still, the priest’s warning continues to resonate in certain faith circles. His core message is less about a single halftime show and more about vigilance.

“Be wary. Be aware,” he urged viewers. “If it’s not about Christ, then what is it about?”

Whether one agrees with his ᴀssessment or not, the conversation he has reignited touches on a familiar tension: how Christians should engage with mainstream culture in an age where entertainment, politics, and faith increasingly collide.
