Can You Make Money Without Believing in God? Pastor T. Mwangi Sparks a Bold Debate
In a wide-ranging and deeply philosophical conversation, Pastor T. Mwangi tackled one of the most uncomfortable questions of our time: Can someone make money without believing in God? His response was neither simplistic nor preachy. Instead, it unfolded into a layered discussion about systems, culture, exploitation, timing, discipline, and spiritual alignment.
At the heart of Mwangi’s argument lies a striking truth: wealth is not universally defined. What one generation calls success, another dismisses. For some, wealth is land. For others, academic тιтles. For the tech generation, it is digital influence and access. In parts of Europe, wealth may mean time freedom and quality of life rather than luxury vehicles. In many African contexts, however, wealth is visibly material—cars, homes, social status.
“Whoever defines success for you controls your ambition,” Mwangi explains. If global elites define luxury, they also shape aspiration. Entire economies, he argues, are structured around narratives that cluster people into categories, making them easier to influence and control.
But beyond definitions of wealth lies a more controversial claim: many powerful economies were built on exploitation. Slavery, colonial land acquisition, and structural inequality gave certain nations enormous advantages. When labor is unpaid or underpaid, profit margins explode. Mwangi bluntly states that some modern wealth systems are simply refined versions of older exploitative frameworks.
This leads to a sensitive question: Is it harder to become extraordinarily wealthy while strictly adhering to Christian ethics? Mwangi suggests that oppressive systems—what he metaphorically calls “the system of Egypt”—can accelerate wealth accumulation. In contrast, ethical systems rooted in fair wages and integrity often grow slower. It is not that faith prevents wealth, but that righteousness resists exploitation.
Yet he firmly rejects the idea that belief in God is required to make money. According to Mwangi, the Bible outlines three universal forces: laws, principles, and disciplines. These operate whether one believes in God or not.
The first is the law of reciprocity: giving produces return. Philanthropists may not quote Scripture, but they apply ancient biblical principles. The second is principles such as hard work, stewardship, and тιтhing.
The third is discipline—integrity, time management, and consistency. These are not mystical formulas. They are frameworks that function universally.
“Whether you love God or not,” Mwangi insists, “when you apply the laws and principles of wealth, you will make money.”
However, the conversation does not stop at systems. It dives into timing and what some call luck. Referencing Ecclesiastes 9:11—“time and chance happen to them all”—Mwangi argues that preparation meets opportunity at specific moments. Hard work alone does not guarantee success. Neither does luck operate in isolation.
He describes three dimensions of time: the set time, the appointed time, and the time of visitation. The set time is when previous labor suddenly gains traction. The appointed time is when destiny cannot be rushed—like a pregnancy that must reach full term. The time of visitation is a divine alignment moment, often missed by those unprepared.
This perspective reframes the “luck” debate. Bill Gates’ access to early computing resources may look like fortune, but Mwangi would argue that preparation allowed opportunity to transform into legacy. Chance visits everyone, but only the prepared can host it.
Cultural systems also shape financial outcomes. Mwangi highlights how some communities circulate money internally, strengthening collective economic power. When wealth rotates within a community—through businesses, lending, and support networks—it multiplies. In contrast, fragmented individualism weakens economic momentum.
Faith traditions also influence financial behavior. Islamic finance discourages exploitative interest. Jewish economic practice historically emphasized communal circulation. Christianity, at its best, warns against allowing possessions to become idols. Spiritual worldview shapes economic choices.
But Mwangi offers one of his most sobering reflections when discussing “good” and “bad” money. For him, the issue is not how much you have, but how you made it. Wealth built on oppression, corruption, or exploitation carries consequences. He recounts observing individuals who amᴀssed questionable fortunes yet faced devastating personal outcomes.
“The blessings of the Lord make rich and add no sorrow,” he says, emphasizing that clean wealth sustains generational stability. Ill-gotten gain may prosper temporarily but can erode legacy through addiction, conflict, or collapse.
He further challenges leaders who mismanage public resources. Poverty, in his view, is often the result of exploitation and corruption. When funds meant for healthcare, education, or opportunity are diverted, the suffering of the vulnerable becomes a moral indictment. And according to Mwangi, injustice eventually demands accountability.
The discussion eventually shifts toward destiny and self-discovery.
Mwangi introduces the idea of predestination—not as fatalism, but as design. Every individual, he argues, is wired uniquely. Fulfillment comes not from mimicking societal bias but from aligning with one’s intrinsic calling.
A fish does not need swimming lessons. A human does. When people operate outside their natural design—chasing careers imposed by family or culture—they may earn income but lack fulfillment. True wealth, he suggests, integrates purpose with provision.
