The DNA on the Shroud: What Barrie Schwortz Says Scientists Couldn’t Easily Explain
In 1978, Barrie Schwortz was not searching for a religious revelation. He was a professional technical pH๏τographer working in Los Angeles, known for precision imaging systems used in aerospace and scientific documentation. Accuracy—not belief—defined his career.
So when he was invited to join a team of American scientists traveling to Turin, Italy, to examine the Shroud of Turin, he ᴀssumed the project would be straightforward. The goal was to apply modern analytical techniques to a linen cloth long claimed to be the burial shroud of Jesus of Nazareth.
Schwortz expected evidence of medieval artistry—paint, dye, or chemical manipulation. He did not expect ambiguity.
Inside the Royal Palace of Turin, the team conducted nearly continuous examinations for five days. Ultraviolet fluorescence pH๏τography, infrared reflectance imaging, X-radiography, and microscopic analysis were performed. Schwortz documented everything—individual fibers, discolorations, thread structures.
No paint was detected. No dye compounds were identified. The body image appeared confined to the outermost fibrils of the linen threads, rather than soaking into the cloth as a liquid pigment would. That detail alone separated it from known artistic techniques.
Still, Schwortz resisted drawing conclusions. His role, as he saw it, was documentation—not interpretation.
One issue lingered long after the 1978 examination ended: the color of the stains.
Ancient blood exposed to air typically darkens over time, turning brown or nearly black due to oxidation. Yet in Schwortz’s pH๏τographic negatives, the stains on the Shroud retained a reddish hue.
In 1995, biochemist Dr. Alan Adler offered an explanation. After analyzing particulate samples collected from the cloth, Adler reported elevated levels of bilirubin—a compound produced when red blood cells break down.
Under severe physical trauma, bilirubin levels in the bloodstream can rise dramatically. Adler proposed that high bilirubin concentrations, combined with serum proteins, could stabilize the reddish coloration of dried blood rather than allowing it to darken as expected.
For Schwortz, this explanation resolved a long-standing technical inconsistency. It did not prove authenticity—but it addressed a chemical anomaly.
As molecular techniques advanced in the early 2000s, researchers began examining dust and debris embedded within the Shroud’s fibers. The aim was to identify trace mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) preserved in microscopic particulate matter.
Mitochondrial DNA is pᴀssed through maternal lines and can be compared against known population haplogroups. Given the Shroud’s documented history—primarily in France and Italy from the medieval period onward—researchers anticipated genetic markers consistent with European lineages.
Some of the sequences did align with Middle Eastern and Mediterranean populations, which was not unexpected given historical trade routes and pilgrimage traffic.
However, additional haplogroups ᴀssociated with North Africa and parts of South Asia were also reported in certain samples.
These findings sparked debate.
The presence of diverse mitochondrial haplogroups does not automatically indicate the geographic origin of the cloth or the idenтιтy of the individual whose image appears on it.
Over centuries, the Shroud has been publicly displayed, touched, repaired, folded, and exposed to environmental contaminants. Linen fibers are highly absorbent and can trap microscopic debris from airborne particles and human contact.
Textile contamination studies show that DNA can transfer easily through handling, humidity fluctuations, and environmental exposure. The Shroud’s long exhibition history makes secondary contamination a serious consideration.
Researchers have also noted that ancient DNA studies are particularly vulnerable to contamination, especially when samples are extremely limited and have been handled repeatedly over time.
In other words: the DNA evidence demonstrates complex biological contact over centuries—but it does not isolate a single individual or time period.
Some analyses suggested that certain haplogroups were clustered in ways not entirely consistent with random handling patterns. This raised additional questions about whether the cloth may have traveled more extensively in antiquity than documented records indicate.
However, the historical chain of custody for the Shroud prior to its appearance in France in the 14th century remains incomplete and debated among historians.
No DNA study to date has conclusively identified a specific historical figure ᴀssociated with the cloth.
The genetic findings are intriguing—but not definitive.
Recognizing that much of the original 1978 documentation remained difficult to access, Schwortz launched Shroud.com in 1996. The site made high-resolution images and scientific reports publicly available, allowing researchers across disciplines to examine primary data directly.
In 2009, he established the Shroud of Turin Education and Research ᴀssociation to preserve and maintain the archive.
His emphasis remained consistent: transparency and documentation over speculation.
Over decades of lectures and interviews, Schwortz was repeatedly asked what he personally believed about the Shroud.
Raised in an Orthodox Jewish household, he had initially approached the project as a detached observer. But years of reviewing imaging data, chemical analyses, and biological studies led him to conclude that the image formation mechanism was not consistent with known medieval artistic methods.
He has stated publicly that, in his opinion, the Shroud’s image was not produced by human hands.
That statement reflects his interpretation of accumulated evidence—not a universally accepted scientific conclusion.
The Shroud of Turin remains one of the most studied—and debated—religious artifacts in the world.
