💔🌿 THE GAMES THEY INVENTED TO SURVIVE

The Story

AmazonĂa, early 2018.

Lucas and Mateo had been inseparable since childhood.

Same neighborhood.

May be an image of one or more people and text

Same school.

Same scars from climbing places they shouldn’t have.

When adulthood pulled their lives in different directions, they promised each other one thing: before responsibilities swallowed them whole, they would disappear together—just once.

The Amazon rainforest became that promise.

They weren’t reckless.

They planned carefully, packed rations, GPS devices, cameras.

Their goal was simple: three weeks trekking along a tributary, documenting wildlife and testing themselves against the wild.

Mateo joked they’d turn it into a game—daily challenges to keep morale up.

Lucas laughed.

“You always make everything a compeтιтion.

That joke would last longer than anything else.

The first month went smoothly.

They filmed sunsets through leaves the size of doors.

They laughed at their own fear when insects crawled too close.

Every night, they recorded short clips—mini-games they invented to pᴀss time.

Who spotted the most birds.

Who built the best shelter.

Loser cooked dinner.

Small things.

Then the storm came.

Rain that didn’t stop for days washed away their planned route.

Their GPS failed.

Food spoiled.

The jungle closed in, loud and endless.

When they realized they were lost, Mateo suggested keeping the games.

“If we stop playing,” he said, “we’ll start thinking too much.

Lucas agreed.

They started logging everything.

Days became points.

Hunger became a challenge.

Fear became something to laugh at on camera.

The footage from the second month feels different.

The games changed.

Instead of jokes, there were rules.

Instead of laughter, there was silence between turns.

One game rewarded the one who ate more.

Another punished weakness.

Mateo started writing scores on a piece of bark, tallying wins with sharp scratches.

Lucas lost more often.

By the third month, the jungle had stripped them down to instinct.

Their recordings became methodical.

“Day 67,” Lucas whispered once, his voice hollow.

“Mini-game: who stays awake all night.

” Mateo smiled, but his eyes never left the camera.

They talked less.

When they did, it was about rules.

One night, the camera caught Mateo carving something larger into the wood wall of their shelter.

ONLY ONE GOES HOME.

Lucas stared at it for a long time.

He didn’t argue.

He just nodded.

Friendship, it turns out, can bend before it breaks.

Rescuers found Lucas weeks later, wandering near a riverbank, dehydrated and barely conscious.

He clutched the camera like a lifeline.

Mateo was nowhere to be found.

Lucas told them almost nothing.

He said they played games to stay sane.

He said Mateo got sick.

He said the jungle was unforgiving.

Doctors chalked up his silence to trauma.

But when investigators reviewed the footage, they noticed something chilling.

There was no clear moment of loss.

No accident.

No attack.

No storm taking Mateo away.

Just games.

In the final clip, both men sit across from each other.

Thin.

Dirty.

Calm.

Mateo reaches out his hand.

Lucas hesitates, then takes it.

They hold on longer than necessary.

“I’m sorry,” Mateo whispers.

The camera drops.

Seven seconds of darkness.

Lucas never watched the footage again.

He returned home to headlines calling him a miracle survivor.

Friends hugged him.

Family cried.

Everyone asked about Mateo.

Lucas learned to answer without answering.

At night, he still counts things—steps, breaths, memories.

Little things.

He avoids games.

He avoids compeтιтion.

He avoids forests.

Because somewhere deep in the Amazon, there is a place where friendship became strategy, and survival required a winner.

They went in together.

But the jungle doesn’t care about bonds.

It only keeps score.
