DNA From the Turin Shroud Revealed a Global Genetic Trail

Scientists Found DNA Code in the Turin Shroud — And the Results Complicated Everything

The Shroud of Turin is one of the most studied religious artifacts in history. Preserved in the Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist in Turin, Italy, the linen cloth bears the faint image of a crucified man.

Visible are wounds on the wrists and feet, marks consistent with scourging, and injuries to the head that many ᴀssociate with a crown of thorns.

Its documented history begins in the 14th century in France. In 1988, radiocarbon testing dated the cloth to between 1260 and 1390, leading many to conclude it was a medieval forgery. For years, that seemed to settle the debate.

But science moved forward — and so did the investigation.

In 2015, researchers from the University of Padua undertook a different type of examination. Instead of focusing solely on dating the linen, they extracted microscopic dust particles, fibers, and biological residues embedded in the cloth.

Using ultra-clean sampling techniques and next-generation DNA sequencing, scientists analyzed mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA). This type of genetic material is particularly useful in ancient samples because it is more abundant and resilient over time.

The goal was not to find “Jesus’ DNA.” Rather, researchers aimed to trace the cloth’s historical journey by identifying genetic markers from people who had handled it.

The results were anything but simple.

Instead of a clear, localized European profile, the DNA analysis revealed genetic traces from multiple regions:

  • Western Europe

  • The Middle East

  • North and East Africa

  • The Indian subcontinent

  • Even East Asia

At first glance, this diversity seems confusing. However, it suggests that the cloth may have traveled extensively across trade and pilgrimage routes over centuries.

Some genetic markers matched populations from the Levant region, including communities historically located in Israel, Lebanon, Syria, and Jordan. Others corresponded to European lineages consistent with the cloth’s known presence in France and Italy after the 14th century.

Markers linked to North Africa and parts of Asia raised further questions. If the cloth had circulated through major hubs such as Jerusalem, Edessa (modern-day Şanlıurfa), or Constantinople — all key crossroads of the ancient world — such genetic diversity becomes more plausible.

What the DNA did not reveal was the genetic idenтιтy of the man whose image appears on the shroud. The biological material reflects centuries of contact, not a single individual.

Rather than confirming or disproving authenticity, the DNA evidence tells a different story: this cloth, at the very least, has been touched by people from across the known world.

Alongside genetic testing, scientists studied pollen grains trapped in the fibers — a field known as palynology.

A total of 58 different plant pollen types were identified. While some were native to Europe, many originated in the Middle East, Anatolia, and areas consistent with ancient trade routes.

Most striking was the presence of pollen from Gundelia tournefortii, a thorny plant native to the region between Jerusalem and Jericho. This plant blooms in early spring — around the time of Pᴀssover.

Significant concentrations of this pollen were reportedly found near the head area of the image.

While pollen can travel by wind, the specific geographic clustering and variety suggest prolonged exposure to Middle Eastern environments at some point in the cloth’s history.

Again, this does not prove the Shroud wrapped Jesus — but it challenges the idea that it was simply fabricated in medieval France without prior Eastern connections.

For decades, skeptics argued that the red stains on the Shroud were paint or pigment. Modern microscopic and spectroscopic analysis has identified the presence of human blood components.

The reported blood type is AB — a relatively uncommon type, though not unique.

More intriguing were chemical markers ᴀssociated with severe trauma. Nanoparticles containing creatinine and ferritin — compounds that can be elevated in cases of intense physical stress, muscle damage, and dehydration — were identified in some analyses.

Researchers have suggested that these markers are consistent with someone who endured significant physical suffering.

However, caution is necessary. While these findings are noteworthy, interpretations vary within the scientific community. Not all experts agree on methodology or conclusions.

The 1988 carbon dating remains central to the debate. Three laboratories independently dated a sample from a corner of the cloth to the medieval period.

Later researchers argued that the tested corner may have been part of a repaired section, possibly contaminated or rewoven after damage — including a fire in 1532.

Some textile experts have claimed evidence of “invisible mending,” though this remains debated among scholars.

Importantly, no comprehensive, new radiocarbon dating of a different section has yet been universally accepted. Until that occurs, the medieval date remains the only widely recognized radiometric result.

The DNA findings did not identify Jesus.

They did not overturn radiocarbon dating.

They did not provide a definitive answer.

What they revealed instead was complexity.

What’s the big mystery behind the Shroud of Turin?

The Shroud appears to have accumulated biological traces from multiple continents. It contains pollen linked to specific geographic regions. Its bloodstains show biochemical features consistent with trauma. And its image formation process remains unexplained by conventional painting techniques.

Rather than closing the case, science has widened it.

For believers, the findings reinforce the possibility of ancient origins.

For skeptics, the evidence can still be explained by centuries of handling and historical movement.

For researchers, the Shroud remains one of the most fascinating forensic puzzles in existence.

The cloth has become less a symbol of certainty and more a record of human contact across time — a fabric that has pᴀssed through wars, pilgrimages, empires, and scientific laboratories.

Whether relic, masterpiece, or something in between, the Shroud of Turin continues to challenge both faith and science — not by giving easy answers, but by refusing to disappear into simplicity.
