Kiefer Sutherland Arrested Again at Midnight

Fame, Fallout, and Midnight Headlines: The Turbulent Life of Kiefer Sutherland

Kiefer Sutherland was born into history on December 21, 1966, at St. Mary’s Hospital in London. His father, Donald Sutherland, was already a celebrated actor.

His mother, Shirley Douglas, came from political royalty—her father, Tommy Douglas, pioneered Canada’s universal healthcare system. From the very beginning, Kiefer’s life unfolded under the weight of expectation.

He shared that beginning with his twin sister, Rachel, who would later build a successful career behind the camera. But while she gravitated toward the editing room, Kiefer stepped into the spotlight—drawn to acting with a force that felt almost inevitable.

Yet his childhood was anything but stable.

In 1969, when he was just three years old, his mother was arrested in Los Angeles amid allegations tied to political activism. Though the case collapsed, the fallout forced her back to Canada with her children. Soon after, his parents divorced. Kiefer grew up primarily in Toronto, far from Hollywood’s glamour, seeing his father only during holidays and summers.

The distance shaped him. He later admitted he didn’t fully grasp how famous his father was until he was a teenager. What he did understand, however, was instability—frequent moves, financial strain, and the quiet pressure of a powerful family legacy.

By 15, he dropped out of school to pursue acting.

His early roles carried a raw edge that felt deeply personal. In Stand by Me (1986), he played the menacing Ace Merrill with chilling intensity. In The Lost Boys (1987), his brooding stillness made him magnetic. By the late 1980s, he was part of Hollywood’s new wave of rising stars.

But as his fame grew, so did the turbulence.

In 1989, he was arrested for DUI in Hollywood. Police also discovered a concealed loaded firearm. He avoided prison through a plea deal, but the incident marked the beginning of a long pattern. Another DUI followed in 1993. Then in 2007, while already on probation, he was arrested again with a blood alcohol level more than twice the legal limit. This time, he served 48 days in jail.

Kiefer Sutherland hints 24 could finally make a big comeback

Between those legal troubles, his personal life became tabloid fuel.

In 1990, he met Julia Roberts while filming Flatliners. Their romance moved fast—red carpets, magazine covers, and a wedding scheduled for June 14, 1991. But just three days before the ceremony, Roberts called it off. Days later, she was pH๏τographed in Ireland with Jason Patric—Sutherland’s close friend and former wedding guest.

The breakup became one of Hollywood’s biggest scandals of the decade.

Years later, Sutherland would speak about it with surprising grace, acknowledging that the immense public pressure had overwhelmed them both. He described Roberts as courageous for stepping away from something that didn’t feel right.

But emotional storms weren’t limited to romance.

In 2009, after a Met Gala afterparty in New York, Sutherland headʙuттed fashion designer Jack McCollough outside a nightclub. The designer was reportedly injured, and Sutherland turned himself in days later. Charges were eventually dropped after an apology and private resolution, but the incident added to a growing reputation for volatility.

And yet, at the height of these controversies, his career reached extraordinary levels.

As Jack Bauer in 24, Sutherland became one of television’s most iconic action stars. The real-time thriller captivated more than 100 million viewers worldwide. He won an Emmy, a Golden Globe, and multiple Screen Actors Guild Awards. In 2006, he signed a groundbreaking $40 million contract for three seasons—making him one of the highest-paid actors on television at the time.

But even 24 brought controversy. The show’s depiction of torture sparked debate within U.S. military circles.

When critics argued it could influence real-world interrogation tactics, Sutherland dismissed the idea, defending the separation between fiction and reality.

After decades of intense public scrutiny, he surprised many by reinventing himself as a country musician. In 2016, he released his debut album, Down in a Hole. Critics noted the sincerity in his voice—songs that felt less like performance and more like confession. He toured across North America, played the Grand Ole Opry, and released a second album in 2019.

It was a quieter chapter, one that hinted at reflection.

But the calm did not last.

On January 12, 2026, shortly after midnight, a rideshare driver near Sunset Boulevard reported that Sutherland became agitated during a trip and allegedly threatened him after being refused an early stop. The driver fled the vehicle. Police arrested Sutherland on suspicion of felony criminal threats—a far more serious charge than previous incidents. He was released on $50,000 bond and awaited a February court date.

No physical injuries were reported. Still, the arrest revived decades of history—DUIs in 1989, 1993, and 2007, the 2009 ᴀssault, and now a felony charge in 2026. For many observers, it felt less like an isolated event and more like a recurring cycle.

Q&A: Kiefer Sutherland on his '24' hours of fame and its future - Los Angeles Times

At the same time, his professional future appeared uncertain. A hoped-for revival of 24 lingered in development discussions. Critics had been harsh about some recent projects. The question hung in the air: could he redefine himself again?

Kiefer Sutherland’s life has never followed a straight line. It has been a collision of legacy and rebellion, triumph and self-sabotage, reinvention and relapse. He has stood at the top of television, behind jail bars, on red carpets, and on country music stages.

The headlines keep returning.

And with each one, the same question echoes louder: is this the story of a man losing control—or a man still fighting something no one else can see?
