The Fortune Pope Francis Left Behind Wasn’t What Anyone Expected
Tens of thousands gathered in St. Peter’s Square as the funeral bells echoed across Vatican City. The Argentine flag rested beside a portrait of Jorge Mario Bergoglio—Pope Francis, shepherd to over a billion Catholics and one of the most recognizable spiritual leaders of the 21st century.
Inside a quiet chapel, his sister María Elena Bergoglio held a handwritten document—his final will. Her voice trembled as she read its closing lines. There was no mention of property. No inheritance. No accounts.
“I leave no material wealth,” he had written, “but I leave you an immeasurable treasure.”
Those words made his family cry.
Not because they were disappointed.

Born in 1936 in the working-class Flores neighborhood of Buenos Aires, Jorge Mario Bergoglio grew up in a modest household. His father worked as a railway accountant; his mother cared for their five children with discipline and devotion. Nothing in their home was wasted. Everything had value.
As a young man, Jorge did not immediately choose the priesthood. He studied chemical engineering and worked in a laboratory. To earn extra money, he reportedly took odd jobs—including working as a nightclub bouncer and as a housekeeper.
His early life was ordinary, grounded, practical.
At 21, after a profound spiritual experience during confession, he entered the Society of Jesus. The decision changed his trajectory completely. His mother initially resisted, but Jorge remained firm. In 1969, he was ordained a priest. By 1998, he had become Archbishop of Buenos Aires.
Yet even in high office, he rejected luxury.
He refused to live in the archbishop’s palace. He chose a small apartment. He cooked his own meals. He rode public transportation. When he became a cardinal in 2001, he carried only a modest suitcase to Rome.
This was not an image crafted for cameras. It was a continuation of how he had always lived.
In 2013, after Pope Benedict XVI resigned, Jorge Mario Bergoglio became Pope Francis—the first pontiff from Latin America and the first Jesuit pope in history.
From his first day, he signaled change.
He declined the traditional papal apartments, choosing instead to reside in the Casa Santa Marta guesthouse. He avoided ornate vestments and drove a modest car. He publicly criticized clerical excess and called out corruption within the Church’s financial systems.

Throughout his papacy, Francis maintained regular contact with his sister María Elena in Argentina. He called her twice a month. Their conversations were simple—about health, weather, everyday life.
He explicitly instructed that no family member should profit from his position. There were no financial privileges extended to relatives. No special roles. No public appearances designed to elevate the Bergoglio name.
